2枚目のアルバムである "21" は全世界で大ヒット。
全英では11週連続1位（通算23週1位）
全米では通算24週1位を獲得。
さらに発売以来39週連続でトップ5位以内を記録し、
あのマイケル・ジャクソンの記録を塗り替えました。
第54回グラミー賞において、彼女は6部門を受賞。
この曲も、最優秀レコード賞、最優秀楽曲賞、
そして最優秀短編音楽ビデオの3部門を受賞しました。

※今回のポイント※
これだけ有名な曲ですから、たくさんの人が訳しています。
でも、どうにもしっくりこないんですよ。
まず、冒頭からショッキングな言葉が多々出てくるので、
「復讐の歌」と捉えて、ドギツく訳す人。
次に、「失恋から立ち直る強い女の歌」と捉える人。
どちらも、私の考え方とは少し違うんですよね。
それを実際に訳しながら説明していきます。
また、音楽も映像も素晴らしい物ですから、
しっかりと演出感のある字幕にしていきたいと思います。

"fever pitch" は「熱狂」として使われますから、
"Reaching a fever pitch" は「最高潮に達する」でしょうか。
でも、"fire" なので「潮」はあんまり使いたくないですね。
次のようにしました。
”心に炎が ―
燃え始めている
やがて 燃え盛り
私を闇から連れ出すの"

[Clean version:] とか [Explicit version:] とかありますけど、
「お上品な方」と「過激な方」と覚えてください。
色々なレーティング（年齢制限）が厳しい国なので、
歌詞も2パターン用意されたりするんですね。
と言っても、変わっているのは単語ひとつだけです。
"sell me out" は「私を売って」＝「私を裏切って」
"I'll lay your ship bare" or "lay your shit bare"
ここがちょっと変わる場所なんですけど、
"lay bare" って言うのは「むき出しにする」とか
「暴露する」って意味になります。
ですから、前者は「船の装備品を外して丸裸にする」
後者は「あなたの "shit" を暴露してやる」
つまり、「あなたのやってきた事を公にしてやる」
みたいなニュアンスです。
"See how I leave with every piece of you"
"See how" が「どうやって～するか見て」とすれば、
大事なのは "I leave with every piece of you" ですね。
直訳すれば「あなたのカケラ全部と一緒に去る」ですが、
つまりは「あなたの全てを奪い去る」と考えられます。
恐いですね、恐ろしいですね。
恐いので、意訳して外連味のある字幕にします。
"underestimate" は「見くびる」「過小評価」です。
”ようやく ―
あなたが ハッキリ見える
どうぞ 私を裏切って
あんたの悪事をバラすから
どう破滅に追いやるのか
目に焼き付けて

"we almost had it all"
"had it all" は直訳すると「全部持った」
よくマツコ・デラックスが、フジテレビの加藤アナに対して
「お前は何でも持ってんだな！」と皮肉りますけど、そういう事です。
つまりは「完璧」の意味。
他にも "You had it all" ＝「このリア充め！」みたいにも使えます。
他にも "You had it all" ＝「このリア充め！」みたいにも使えます。
「私たちは、ほとんど完璧だった」を、
もう少し男と女の関係っぽく言い換えるなら、
「私たち、うまくいっていたのに」でしょうか。
”この愛の傷跡が
二人のことを思い出させる
ずっと考えてしまうの

"can't help"
割と良く使われる表現で「～せずにはいられない」です。
ご年配の方なら、エルヴィス・プレスリーの
「好きにならずにいられない」を思い出していただければ。
"We could have had it all"
さきほど "had it all" は「完璧」だと言いましたが、
今回はストレートに「全てを手に入れられた」としました。
実は曲の後半で "it al" が繰り返されるパートがあるので、
こうしておいた方が臨場感が増すんです。
”この愛の傷跡が
息苦しくさせる
思わずにはいられないの

字幕では入れられないために、ここでは省略。
後で解説します。
"Rolling in the deep"
さて、今回一番の難関は、タイトルでもあるこのフレーズ。
なんか変な言い回しなんですよね。
だから、色々と考えました。
"roll" に知らない意味があるんじゃないかとか、
"in the deep" には「海」の意味もあるからソッチか？とか、
"Rolling in the deep" っていう言い回しやスラングが
あるんじゃないかと色々調べてみたんです。
で、たどり着いたのが、アデル本人に対するインタビュー記事。

本人が言うには、
「"roll deep" という英国のスラングから着想を得た」
「ものすごく深い所で繋がっていて、
離れがたい間柄だと思っていたのに、そうじゃなかった」
これはアデル自身の失恋体験談がベースなんです。
これを読んだ時、まさに目からウロコが落ちました。
内容の部分じゃなく、次のように思ったんです。
「そうか！向こうの人たちも分かっていなかったんだ！」
「みんな "Rolling in the deep" ってナニ？ と思ってたのね」
これで訳の方向性が決まりました。
直訳でいこう（笑）
”深く 回り続けているわ
あなたは手にしていた
私の心を
そして 奏でたの
この鼓動に合わせて"
この、一見意味が分からない「深く 回り続けているわ」
これが終盤になると分かってくるんです。
また、"play" にはもちろん「遊ぶ」＝「弄ぶ」の
意味も込められていると思いますが、ここでは「奏でる」に。
前文との接続詞が "And" で、さらに後には "to the beat"
となっていれば、こちらの方が自然だと思います。
こうしておくと、後半で "but" が出てきた時に、劇的な効果が。
その際にまた説明します。

ここは特別難しくないので、一気に訳します。
”あんたに 聞かせてやる ―
お話なんかないわ
でも あんたの噂は聞いたよ
腐った頭を燃やしてやんなきゃね
私のことを思い出すのよ
絶望の底からね
そこに家を建てなよ
一緒に住むことはないんだから"
字幕用にちょっと演出を加えています。
「あなたの頭」を「腐った頭」とか。
あんまり変な意訳はしないのですが、
内容を壊さない範囲なら、たまにはお遊びも必要です。

ここはさっきの部分と少しだけ違うんですね。
"And you played it, to the beat" が
"But you played it, with a beating" になっています。
前者は「奏でた」と訳しました。
つまり、それは彼女にとって「幸せな時間」だったんです。
「心地良かった」んです。
でも、ここでは "But" となっている。
だから「奏でた」と対にして「弄んだ」と訳します。
そして "to the beat" が「ビートに合わせる」ならば、
"with a beating" は「ドキドキ」を連想させます。
”全てを手に入れられたのよ
深く 回り続けているわ
あなたは手にしていた
私の心を
だけど 弄んだの
この想いごと"

"Throw your soul through every open door" は、
「ちょっと気のあるフリをされれば、誰にでもシッポを振る」
みたいに解釈することもできます。
"Count your blessings" はお決まりの表現で、
「自分がどんなに恵まれているのか、その事を神に感謝しなさい」
こんなニュアンスで使われます。
"You'll pay me back in kind"
"pay back" は「返済する」「借りを返す」
"in kind" は「同種のもので」
"reap just what you sow"
これは "you reap what you sow" というイディオムから。
「自分で蒔いた種は自分で刈り取る」＝「自業自得」
”開いたドア全部に
魂を投げ込んで
探し物が見つかる
幸運を数えなよ
私の悲しみを

自分でまいた種よ"
意訳よりもコチラの方が雰囲気に合っていると思ったので、
あえて直訳っぽくしてあります。

さて、もうクライマックスですので、曲全体の解釈を。
でも、その前にコーラス部分の説明も必要ですね。
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)

この曲では、バックで印象的にこのコーラスが流れています。
「あなたは、私に出会わなければ良かったと願うようになるわ」
＝「出会った事を後悔させてやる」
「涙がこぼれそうよ」
「深く 回り続けているわ」
この最初のフレーズが強烈なだけに、
短絡的に「復讐」と思っている人が多いのだと思います。
「涙がこぼれそうよ」は無視ですか？
先ほど言った通り、このコーラス、このフレーズは、
「繰り返される」んです。
しかも「交互」に。
分かりますか？
彼女は「復讐したい」と思っても、実際は「できない」んです。
裏切られて捨てられて「憎い」「悔しい」。
でも、「忘れられない」「本当はまだ好き」。
そんな相反する気持ちが、
心の中（in the deep）でグルグルと回って（Rolling）いる。
愛憎が「渦巻いて」いる。
これが "Rolling in the deep" に込められた意味です！
”全てを手に入れられたのよ

彼女は冒頭で
「心に炎が燃え始めている」
「やがて 燃え盛り私を闇から連れ出すの」
と歌っています。
でも「やがて」なんです。
まだ、その「闇」からは抜け出ていません。
そして、そうなる保証もないんです。
"up down" ではなく "rolling" ……。
つまりは、同じ場所をずっと回り続けている。
その場所（失意）から一歩も動けていないんですよ。
「復讐譚」でも「強い女性」でもなく、
「失恋で傷ついている、等身大の女性の歌」―
それが私の解釈です。
愛が深かったからこそ、憎しみも深い。
でも、決して憎みきれない。
本当に愛想を尽かしたのなら忘れられる。
でも忘れずに執着している。
それは、まだ好きと言う気持ちが残っているから。
吹っ切れる日が来るまで、
心の奥底、深い所でグルグルと回り続ける……。
名曲です。
いやぁ、字幕って本っ当に難しいもんですね。

マタマタ今日はAdeleをじっくりと読ませていただきました。
彼女は大好き００７の Skyfall を歌っていますよね。年齢が若いのに素晴らしい歌手だと思って、時々聞いていました。
わやQさんおサイトは訳もですが解説が大好きです。本当に楽しませてもらっています。
で、真似事で昔のヒット曲の訳などしてみますが、いやぁ何日もかかってしまいますし、母国語がお粗末なので、ますます出口が無くなって、ホントぐるぐる回ってしまいます。
歌詞は、歌っている歌手の出身国によっても、ちょっと違った意味合いに取れる場合がありますよね。何人だったらこうは言わないだろうと！
今更この歳になって、辞書など調べまくっています。
で、上記の"can't help"はプレスリーを思いつきましたが、誰か違う歌詞でも聞き覚えがあるような？ でも何だったか今は思い出せずにいます。
お陰であまり外出が出来ない持病があるのですが、在宅で又楽しく過ごすもの見つけたです。
どうもありがとう♪対訳多いけれど、なかなか素敵な訳だと思います。素晴らしい語学力ですね。私も又日本語も学びなおさないとです。
細かい部分に色々と粗はあるのですが、そんな些細なことを吹き飛ばす内容でした。
アストンマーティンが「あの音」とともに登場したシーンは、劇場で思わず声を上げそうになるくらい興奮しました（笑）
エピローグで、今回初登場の人物たちが、旧シリーズに繋がる所なんかもたまりません。
メインテーマである "Skyfall" は、いずれ戸田奈津子さんとはまた違う感じで訳してみたいなと思っています。
そうそう、SUGARMAMAさんのコメントも、この "Rolling In The Deep" の記事と、ご自身の体験とを引っ掛けて「ぐるぐる回る」なんて入れてくるあたり、とっても上手いですよねえ。
こういう感性こそが、語学力よりもずっと重要！
