字幕づくり 第62回
今回は "Shawn Mendes" の "Stitches" に挑戦。

ティーンネイジのアーティストは星の数ほどいますが、
いま現在、わやQ一番のお気に入りかもしれません。

※今回のポイント※
対訳や字幕作成を行っていると、意識させられるのが、
「言葉の選び方」や「語調」というものです。
それにより、読み手のイメージがガラリと変わるからです。
同じ歌詞を訳しているワケですから、本来そう違いはないハズ。
でも、訳す人により、明らかに印象が違いますよね？
それを決めるのは、おそらく「語学力」ではなく、
「どんなイメージを持って取り組むか」なのだと思います。
では、今回の曲はどうでしょう？
わやQがイメージしたのは「ハードボイルド」。
「恋人との関係に苦しむ男の歌」なのですが、
言葉のチョイスにそう感じさせるものがあったんです。
そこに「若さ」の要素も、ほんの少し入れられたら……
そんな風に、テーマを決めて挑みます。

全部直訳してみましょう。
「前にも、傷つけられたことはあったと思う」
「でも、こんなすごい傷を残した相手はいなかった」

これを意訳してまとめると、次のようになります。
" 傷ついた経験は 過去にもあるけど ―
こんな "痛み" を残しはしなかった
お前の "言葉" はナイフより鋭く ―
"深手" を負った俺は 助けを待つ …

ここは、後半部分を字幕用に調整。
" ああ "沈んでいく" ようだ
でも "生還" する術は 分かってる
お前を "恋人" と呼ぶのを ―

「お前は、俺が血を流すのを、じっと見ている」
「俺が、息絶えるまで」
これを字幕用の文字数にまとめるのは、無理があります。
幸い、このフレーズはまた登場するので、内容を２分割。
そして、2回に分けて使うというテクニックを。
"now that"
前後関係にもよるのですが、「今や～だから」が一般的。
"stitches"
タイトルでもあるこの言葉。
色んな意味がありますが、どれも「（針で）縫う」イメージ。
"Tripping over myself"
直訳すれば「自分自身につまづいている」
これは「ひとりで（苦しみ）もがいている」と意訳。
その方が、曲のイメージに近いと思います。
" 血を流す俺 見つめるお前
震えて 俺は崩れ落ちる
もう "口づけ" はないんだ
だから 傷を縫わなくちゃ …
ひとり "もがいてる"
痛むんだ 助けてくれよ
だけど もう "口づけ" はない
早く 傷を縫わなくちゃ "

「飛んで火に入る～」としたくなっちゃいますが、ここは自重。
自分を「炎に吸い寄せられ、燃えてしまう蛾」だと揶揄しています。
"you lured me in, I couldn't sense the pain"
「君は俺を釣りあげた」
「俺は苦しみがあることを察知できなかった」
これも字幕では長すぎますね。
ここは、その前の「蛾」の件から、繋げてしまいましょう。
ほぼ同じことを言っているので、かなり短縮できます。
"I'm gonna reap what I sow"
割とお馴染みのフレーズですね。
日本でも、ほぼ同じ内容の言葉があります。
「自分で蒔いた種は、自分で刈り取るつもりだ」
"see red"
「赤を見る」＝「カッとなる」「腹を立てる」
怒りで目の前が真っ赤になるイメージです。
" 炎に誘われた "蛾" のようさ
その先の "苦痛" に気づけなかった …
お前の心は "痛いほど" 冷たい
これは 自分が蒔いた種
自分自身に 腹が立つ … "

同じ言葉が繰り返されるパートは、腕の見せどころ。
言葉や意味を分解し、うまく散りばめます。
見ている人を飽きさせないように。
そして、曲を盛り上げるように。
また、「外科手術」を思わせる言葉が並んでいます。
そういうことも意識して、訳をするのも大事です。

針と糸 … "摘出" しなきゃ

針と糸 … "縫合" するんだ
針と糸 … 忘れなきゃ
針と糸 … 終わらせなきゃ
