字幕づくり 第71回
今回は "Taylor Swift" の "Out Of The Woods" に挑戦。
大晦日に公開されたこのMV。
これを観た時に気がついたんです。
「あ、テイラーの曲、まだ一つもやってない」

※今回のポイント※
元彼、ワン・ダイレクションのハリーとのこと、
そう言われていますし、実際そうなんでしょう。
でも、あんまり「個人的な情報」が多すぎると、
多くの人が共感できる字幕にはならないと思うので、
ここでは意識しないようにします。

"We were lying on your couch"
この "couch" はカウチ・ソファーのこと。
いわゆる「寝椅子」ですね。
大体は「カウチ」でそのまま通じると思うのですが、
中には「カウチって何？」って人もいると思います。
こういう場合は、最大公約数をとる必要がありますよね。
多分、単純に「ソファー」が一番分かりやすいでしょう。
"You took a Polaroid of us"
「あなたが、私たち（二人）のポラロイドを撮影した」
ここは短く「写真を撮ったよね」ぐらいがスマート。
だって、二人の思い出を回想しているんですから。
"The rest of the world was black and white"
この "The rest of the world" はよく使われるフレーズ。
「（私たちの住む）世界の、『それ以外（the rest）』の場所」
つまり「外界」とも言えますし、「よその国（地域）」とも言えます。
"we were in screaming color"
この "screaming color" というのは、あまり馴染みがありませんが、
「ケバケバしい色」みたいなニュアンスでしょう。
今回は一応恋の歌なので「鮮やかに色づいていた」くらいに。
"And I remember thinking…"
「そして、（こんな風に）考えていたことを思い出す」と、
この後のサビの部分で、当時考えていたことが歌われます。
字幕でどう表現しようかと考えましたが、
結局ここでは「そう、あの頃は―」とだけにして、
サビの最後の部分に「そんな風に思ってた」と付け加えました。
思い返せば ―

写真を 撮ったよね
その時 気づいたの

「二人だけが 鮮やかに色づいてる」

タイトルでもある "out of the woods" は、
暗い森の中を抜け出るイメージです。
そのため「困難を切り抜ける」的な意味でよく使われます。
"in the clear" も、同じような表現です。
このパートはテンポが速いので、繰り返し部分は一まとめに。

まだ開けないの？ 二人の行く先は …

そんな風に 思ってた

「私たち、崩壊させるための（関係）を築いていた」
「そして、一緒にたじろいでいた」
直訳すると、こんな感じでしょうか？
ここは、少し分かりやすいように意訳。
「私たち "壊すために作る" そんなこと繰り返してた」
"Your necklace hanging from my neck"
「あなたの（くれた）ネックレスが、私の首に（まだ）掛かっている」
字幕にするためには、一文字でも減らしたいところ。
「胸元には、あなたのネックレス」
"The night we couldn't quite forget
When we decided (we decided)
To move the furniture so we could dance"
「あの夜のことが忘れられない」
「二人が（一緒に）ダンスできるように、家具を移動しよう」
「そう決めた時のことを」
ここは、時間的にも字幕表示のタイミング的にも、
かなり余裕がなく、難しい部分でした。
そのため、「そう決めた時のことを」の部分をカット。
思い出してる
去年の 12月のこと
私たち "壊すために作る" ―
そんなこと 繰り返してた
胸元には あなたのネックレス
忘れられない あの夜のこと
「一緒に 踊れるように ―」
「部屋の 模様替えをしようよ」
あの頃の 二人のように ―
ふたつの 紙飛行機が
飛んで行くわ …
そう あの頃は ―

"you hit the brakes too soon"
この "hit the brakes" は、「ブレーキを（急に）強く踏む」
さらに "too soon" 「早すぎる」ということなので、
「ブレーキ操作を誤った」という内容ですね。
"When you started cryin', baby, I did, too"
「あなたが泣き始めた時、私もつられて泣いてしまった」
文字数を減らしたいのと、説明的にしたくなかったので意訳。
「泣き出すあなたを、見ていられなかった」
"we couldn't take the heat"
この "take the heat" は「暑さに耐える」という意味。
そこから転じて「（激しい）批判に耐える」の意味でも使われます。
きっと、色々と騒がれたんでしょう。
今回は「周りの『雑音』に耐えかねて」と意訳。
"the monsters turned out to be just trees"
この "turn out to be ～" は、
「結局、～であることが分かる」という言い回しです。
ほら あなたがブレーキ操作を誤って ―
20針も 縫ったじゃない？
泣き出すあなたを 見てられなかった
でも 朝までそばにいたでしょ？
周りの "雑音" に耐えかねて ―
私は立ち去り「もう 自由にしてあげる」
でもね "怪物" は ただの "樹" だった

最後は4回繰り返し。
最後の一回だけ、訳を変えてフィニッシュします。

今 どこにいるのかしらね？
いつもブログを読んでくださる方の中には、
今回わやＱがノリきれていないのが分かると思います。
曲も歌も映像も素晴らしいのですが、
歌詞に「パーソナル感」が強くて、入り込めませんでした。
ステキなフレーズもたくさんあるんですけどね。
「詩」として昇華しきれていないように感じてしまうのです。
逆に、その「生々しさ」が受けているのかもしれません。
これは、あくまで個人的な感覚の問題なのですが、
どうしてもテイラーの姿が浮かんできて、自己投影できません。
そして気がつきました。
これまで、この大ヒットアルバム「1989」の曲を、
このブログでは無意識に避けてきた理由を。
だって、現在の彼女って……
モデルも羨むようなスタイルと美貌、
確かな実力と素晴らしいパフォーマンス、
数々のセレブと恋をし、周りにはイケてる「親友」がいっぱい、
2015年のツアーではチケット販売だけで300億円を稼ぎ出し、
「最もチャリティを行ったセレブ」で4年連続1位となる慈善家。
こんな方に、わやＱは成りきれません！（笑）
いやぁ、字幕って本っ当に難しいもんですね。
